CHAPTER 1
The Password
Enter With The Password: Thank you!
“Make yourselves at home, talking praise.
Thank Him. Worship Him.”
Psalm 100:4 [MSG]
You may be thinking, “Seriously, Phil, you’re giving me another password to remember? I have so many already!” I get it but thank God for the password reset option, so when we forget our password, we can reset it. I won’t disclose to you how many times I use that option, but it’s way too many to count. Today let’s reset the password to “Thank You.”
Passwords are essential in this technological age because the right one gives you access to areas you wouldn’t usually enter without one. I’m going to state the obvious here; passwords are entered first before access is granted. You’re probably thinking, “What does this have to do with gratitude?” Everything!
Growing up, I was always told to say, “Thank You,” after someone did something nice for me, and yes, we should - no doubt about it.(There is such power in this, and I will outline it in a future chapter.) The emphasis on giving thanks has been to say “Thank You” at the end of an interaction, not before. After all that has been said and done, then we say, “Thank You.”
There is more to thank you than just two words after someone has done something nice for you. I want to submit to you that the phrase is not only an ending point but an access point to enter. In Psalm 100:4, the Message translation, it tells us that thank you is the password. God is attracted to a grateful heart, and He gives access to grateful people.
Thank you isn’t just an ending point
but it can be an access point to enter.
Psalm 100:4 (MSG) says,“Enter with the password: “Thank You!” The King James Version says it this way:Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.”
Here is the question, “Why is God so attracted to a grateful heart? Why does God give access to grateful people? What is it about gratitude that God loves so much that He will open Himself to us and say, “Here I am the God of the universe join Me in My presence?” Are you ready for the answer? The answer is, we only have access to God by His grace, and its God’s very grace that causes gratitude in our lives. Gratitude is the result of God’s grace.
Grace causes gratitude.
Gratitude is a result of God’s grace.
When we receive God's abundant grace by faith in our lives, then gratitude is the outcome. The very nature of God's grace takes the focus off self and onto the goodness that comes from God. Gratitude causes you to acknowledge that goodness lies outside of self. I am not the focus of my life; something more significant is, and that’s God and His Grace. Oh, it will affect your life; when Gods’ grace is received internally, then gratitude is expressed externally. Gratitude is always a matter of the heart. When we say “Thank you,” it has a rebound effect. It not only affects someone else’s life, but it also impacts your own.
