Chapter 1: Labyrinth City and a Comrade’s Past
“So this is the labyrinth city...”
Roughly a week after the demon attack, we arrived by horse-drawn carriage at the labyrinth city of Velhen to complete the trial Fam had given me. Within three months, I had to retrieve the holy sword that was hidden in the depths of the labyrinth.
“It’s a big town,” Kuruta said.
“Yes. There’s something intimidating about it,” I agreed.
The town was surrounded by a giant protective wall. It was so tall, it kind of looked like an arena from afar. Rajah had its own defensive wall, but this one was more imposing.
“It’s almost like a fort. Are they that afraid of the monsters in the mountains?” Raiza asked curiously.
Kuruta shook her head. “You’ve got it the wrong way around. The wall isn’t for outside attack—it’s to defend against the monsters on the inside.” She shaded her eyes and gazed up at the wall. “A long time ago, monsters overflowed from the labyrinth and ravaged the land. That giant wall was constructed by the nations that understood the threat.”
