Since the publication of its first edition in April 2014, Dr Myhill's guide to understanding and overcoming CFS/ME has become a must-read for sufferers from this poorly understood condition. As one example of the nearly 300 5-star reviewers on Amazon says: 'Extremely useful, well written, concepts well explained, absolutely great investment of money and time in reading it.' In the seven years since the second edition was published (January 2017) both new research and new clinical findings have thrown further light onto a condition that for sufferers is life-stopping but for many doctors is 'all in the mind'. Most recently, the UK's NICE guidelines have been updated and Long Covid has changed mainstream perceptions of post-viral fatigue, while Dr Myhill has looked further beyond mainstream medicine into often-ignored more traditional treatments including methylene blue and DMSO. Dr Myhill, supported by expert patient Craig Robinson, has fully rewritten and updated her book to include new insights throughout and new chapters on the PK diet, photodynamic therapy, micro-immunotherapy, ME and Long Covid, and the politics of CFS and ME.

Dr Sarah Myhill qualified in medicine (with Honours) from Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1981 and has since focused tirelessly on identifying and treating the underlying causes of health problems, especially the 'diseases of civilisation' with which we are beset in the West. She has worked in NHS and private practice and for 17 years was the Hon Secretary of the British Society for Ecological Medicine, which focuses on the causes of disease and treating through diet, supplements and avoiding toxic stress. She helps to run and lectures at the Society's training courses and also lectures regularly on organophosphate poisoning, the problems of silicone, and chronic fatigue syndrome. This third edition ofDiagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Myalgic Encephalitis and Long Covid is written on a ‘need-to-know’ basis, as follows:

What you need to knowWhat you need to do
IntroductionThis book is written on the need-to-know principleTake a leap of faith and just do it
Chapter 1The road map for recoveryThe overall strategy:
  • Improve energy delivery
  • Plug the immunological holes in the energy bucket
  • Plug the emotional holes
Chapter 2Chronic fatigue syndrome: the symptoms of poor energy deliveryUse symptoms to discern mechanisms…
Chapter 3Overview of the mechanisms of poor energy delivery and how to fix them…because that has obvious implications for how they are managed
Chapter 4First do the PK diet, then sort out the upper fermenting gut then take the Basic Package of supplementsSort out the fuel in the tank
Chapter 5The mitochondrial enginesTake the supplements Start to detox
Chapter 6OxygenBreathe properly

Chapter 8Sleep – when healing and repair take placeSleep is as vital as diet and pacing
Chapter 9Pacing and the right sort of exerciseYes, it is boring but you will recover more quickly
Chapter 10Myalgic encephalitis and long Covid – the symptoms of inflammationUse symptoms to discern mechanisms…
Chapter 11Overview of the mechanisms of inflammation and how to fix them…because that has obvious implications for how they are managed
Chapter 12Allergy and autoimmunityHow to recognise and deal with these
Chapter 13The general approach to reducing inflammationHow to plug these immunological holes
Chapter 14Detoxing to reduce the toxic load of metals, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, prescription drugs, mycotoxins and moreToxins increase the biochemical friction – How to avoid and reduce the endogenous load
Chapter 15The general approach to treating chronic infection – reduce the infectious loadWe all carry infections – how to start minimising that burden
Chapter 16DMSO (dimethylsulphoxide)A wonderful multitasking tool
Chapter 17Methylene blue for many chronic infectionsReduce the total infectious load
Chapter 18Photodynamic therapy – using light to kill infectionsDitto
Chapter 19Reprogramming the immune system with micro-immunotherapyTrain the immune system to focus its fire and behave itself
Chapter 20Reducing the infectious load with specific antimicrobialsWhich tests to do to identify microbes
Chapter 21Plugging the emotional holes in the energy bucketAvoid doctors Sleep, love, pets, money, humour, meditation, connecting with others
Chapter 22The pattern of recoveryJust do it
Chapter 23The politics of CFS and ME – the name, the shame and the blameHow we humans are poisoning the World and destroying ourselves in the process – The early symptoms of this are CFS and ME
Appendix 1Groundhog BasicWhat we should all be doing all the time to prevent disease and live to our full potential
Appendix 1Groundhog AcuteWhat we should all do at the first hint of any acute infection
Appendix 1Groundhog ChronicWhat we should all be doing all the time as we become chronically ill or aged
Appendix 2Diet, detox and die off (DDD) reactionsYou may get worse, initially, in response to a healing intervention, but things will get better
Appendix 3Commonly used tests and how to interpret themImportant clues are often missed – look at the actual figures and reference ranges
Appendix 4How to access benefitsGet what you’re entitled to
Appendix 5The Bell CFS ability scaleHow sick are you?

The ‘need-to-know’ principle or basis is technically a term used by Governments, and often their Armed Forces, to denote situations where people are told the bare minimum to carry out their duties – i.e., up to their respective security...
