This book aims to help companies, self-employed professionals, and individuals looking for cost-effective CAD software that provides the basic and necessary tools for 2D and 3D computer-aided design. It contains a detailed description of the program and shows the first steps in the professional handling of TurboCAD 2022 in a"step by step" tutorial based on a practice-oriented exercise example. In addition, tips and tricks in two and three-dimensional drawing are shown, which specifically optimize working in technical professions, so as to prevent unnecessary stress and save time, and as a result money as well. The wide ranging possibilities of TurboCAD are shown, so that the reader can evaluate for themselves whether the supplied tools meet their own requirements. All commands, tools, and procedures presented in this book refer to the TurboCAD 2022 Pro Platinum version. However, many of the commands shown are already included in previous software versions.

Matthias Bosse completed an apprenticeship as a draftsman and then a bachelor's and master's degree at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences in the field of process and supply engineering. During his training and later professional career, he gained experience with various CAD software (including SolidWorks®, AutoCAD®, MagiCAD®, MicroStation®) and subsequently got to know the different working methods and program designs. As a mechanical engineer in shipbuilding in Hamburg, he came in contact with the software TurboCAD®. He quickly familiarized himself with it through training and the almost daily use of the software. He currently works as an independent design engineer under the name of CryoCAD Consulting& Engineering (www.cryocad.com) and offers design services in the areas of mechanical engineering and plant design as well as offering TurboCAD® training.

1 GETTING STARTED

The chapter “Getting Started” includes exercises whose goal is to provide the user with a fast but sound and practical introduction to the TurboCAD® software. It covers the CAD core areas of 2D drawing, 3D design and drawing derivation. The user is guided through the tasks step by step and gets to know the structure of the user interface as well as the handling of basic drawing and modification commands.

The chapter “Getting Started” is to be understood as a self-contained chapter. In addition, cross-chapter references are given, which provide further explanations when needed. The tasks are simultaneously aimed at both CAD beginners and experienced professionals.

The exercises can be performed with the TurboCAD® versions “Deluxe”, “Expert” and “Pro Platinum”. Given that only basic commands are used, older versions of the program can be adopted. The exercises were created with the TurboCAD® Pro Platinum 2018 version and are based on an unchanged user interface and program setting, straight after installation.

If required, a 30-day demo of the various program versions can be downloaded from the website of TurboCAD®. These offer the full range of tools and are therefore well suited to getting to know the software.

During program installation, the default paths are recommended. Depending on the hardware available, graphical representations and program handling may vary. The system requirements of the manufacturer should be taken into account to ensure proper operation.

Software versions up until, and including, 2017 or with RedSDKRenderer installed: If significant graphics problems occur, you can select “GDI” under “Options/ Setup programs/ Native drawing”. A restart is usually required to make the change effective. If the graphics problems persist, the TurboCAD® support service should be contacted.

All questions and suggestions for improvement are welcome and can be directed toinfo@cryocad.com.

After launching TurboCAD® 2022, a window opens where you can choose the workspace style (more 2.1). For the following exercises, the style “Default style” has been used.

The subsequent value entries and illustrations usually require a metric unit system. If an English unit system is activated after installing TurboCAD®, you can switch to a metric system under “Options/ Drawing Setup/ Space Units” as shown inFigure 3-17 on page.
