Come Monday morning, we started a new topic in social studies. The assignment required us to write a report on a place or event of historical significance. Mrs. Weaver decided to have us pair off in groups of two to work on it jointly. She said one of us might be better at research, and the other might be better at writing and composition. As the bell sounded to end the class, we began talking about the upcoming report.
“Katie, I was wondering…do you want us to do that report assignment together?”
Upon hearing my suggestion, she got this serious look on her face. “Of course, we’re doing it together, what do you think!” And she slugged me!
“All right, all right, geez…you don’t have to go all Rocky on me,” I said as I rubbed my throbbing shoulder. “So, about the report, what should we do it on?”
“What if we did our report on some event in this town? I mean, there has to be some historical event which happened around here, don’t you think?”
I glanced out of the corner of my eye. “You know, one day, I was talking to Brian when we were playing video games. He mentioned to me about some mystery regarding an old gold mine where this couple disappeared decades ago. I think he said they were related to the founders of this town. Maybe I could ask Brian about it the next time I see him.”
She shrugged her shoulders in agreement. “All right, that sounds good to me; see what you can find out.”
