Chapter 4 - Rutherfurd Rumble
Early in the morning twelve gathered in a clearing to the north of the Astromose valley. Two gathered to do battle, nine gathered to bear witness, and one lone girl was there to quietly root for the underdog.
Tera could keep a secret better than anyone Ronda had ever met. For this reason she had been permitted to join the others here in front of the scarred north wall of the valley. Ronda had used Tera to deliver the verdict of the council to both of the Rutherfurd brothers. True, Tera did this sort of thing for the council on a regular basis but that’s not why Ronda used her to relay the message this time.
No, Ronda knew when Gary told the council that there were those he cared about that there could be no more than three on his mind at the time. Naturally, he had thought of his brother Tim. One would have been their mother, but Ronda knew that there was only one other person that truly cared about and excepted Gary for who he was. She knew that this would be the only other person that Gary cared for here in Astromose.
Ronda had told Tera to deliver the message so that Gary wouldn't have to feel alone on the battlefield. The council had been split on whether or not to enforce the consequences of the second law, but Ronda knew that there were none on the council who truly wished to see him succeed in overthrowing his much revered older brother.
Tera really did care a great deal for Gary Rutherford. She had loved him for as long as she could remember. In fact, though she insisted on calling him Sam, it pained her every time the name was used. To Tera, it was the height of cruelty to have made him change his name in order to help the rest of the village forget the man that he had most idolized in the entire world. It was only his determination to hone such a singular set of talents against all odds that had kept her from divulging her love for him long ago.
Despite her feelings, she wasn't the bravest person in Astromose. If Gary had ever found the exit he sought so diligently to find and asked her to come with him, a scenario she often played out in her head, she would never be able to go with him. She simply did not have the courage to face the u
