This represents the first critical edition of a fourteenth-century Castilian version of Iacobo de Benavento's thirteenth-century Viridarium consolationis. A comprehensive introductory study (76pp.) serves to document the text’s provenance, compare major versions, and analyze the homiletic form and ethical content. It includes an extensive glossary (32pp.).

1. Introduction (p. 1)

The présent study wlll be concerned wlth three areas of investigation: a) it intends to establish that thé inedited Castillan compilation Tractado de vlçtos e vtrtudes1 is derived from lacopo da Benevento`s Viridarium Consolationis, from whlch are also derlved thé Giardino de consolazlone.

thé Verztere di consotaztone, thé Vergel de grand consolation, thé Vergel de consolation, or thé Vlrtdarto, and thé Vtrgeu de consolation, b) it alms to put an end to thé mlsleading information that began in thé elghteenth century with respect to lacopo da Benevento`s biographlcal background and his authorshlp of thé Viridarium, and c) it offers for thé flrst time a critical édition of thé Tractado.

Until thé nineteenth century it had been argued by most scholars that lacopo da Benevento lived and wrote in thé 1300`s. But it was not known if he was thé same writer who belonged to thé Dominican Order of that time. This confusion concerning his real identity continued throughout thé centuries until thé middle of thé présent century, when évidence emerged indicatlng that he was alive before 1260.

This information appears in a séminal study by Tommaso Kaeppeli, who has clearly demonstrated thé author`s membership between 1255 and 1271 in thé Dominican Order. In his study, Kaeppeli cites several documents dealing with thé author`s whereabouts in thé thirteenth century. In thèse he is mentioned as an eminent figure in thé Order of that time:

Kaeppell mentions another document thé VUae Fratrum, completed by Gerardo de Frachet in 1260, which accounts for lacopo da Benevento`s belonging to thé Order and suggests that he was greatly respected by thé Brothers:
